What an amazing decade for Facebook & Social Media
Founded in 2004, top tier social platform Facebook was initially limited to Harvard students. But by 2006 it was open to everyone over the age of 13. In 2011 Facebook became the largest social network in the world, with 845 million users by the end of the year. The following year, Facebook’s (IPO) raised $16 billion.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Facebook first went public. In that time, social media has transformed the way we communicate and connect with each other. It’s now an essential part of our daily lives, and it’s hard to imagine a world without it.
What started as a simple way to stay connected with friends and family has become a powerful tool for businesses, social movements, and more.
Perhaps the most significant change came in 2012, when Facebook underwent a major redesign. The new design was intended to make the site more user-friendly and visually appealing, and it included several new features, such as a redesigned newsfeed and the ability to “tag” friends in posts. My personal favorite was the introduction of the Timeline feature, which allows users to see a chronological record of their own posts and those of their friends. This has made it easier to keep track of what is happening on the site and has led to a more “conversational” style of social interaction. In addition, Facebook has also introduced a number of other features designed to make the site more user-friendly, such as a new interface for mobile devices and an improved search function.
Lets also acknowledge and reflect on the charities that have been and still are supported through the Tech Giant’s Chan Zukerberge Initiative , a pledge made by co-founder Mark Zukerberge and his wife Pricilla Chan to their new born daughter Max, to give away 99% of their shares during their lifetime. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded in 2015 to solve some of society’s toughest challenges, from eradicating disease and improving education – to addressing the needs in our local communities and build a more inclusive, just, and healthy future for everyone.
In the last 10 years, we’ve seen social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram grow and change in incredible ways. We’ve also seen new platforms emerge, like Snapchat and TikTok. Each of these platforms has had a major impact on the way we socialize, interact and consume information.
Looking back, it’s amazing to see how much social media has changed in such a short period of time. It’s safe to say that the next 10 years will be just as transformative.
