A resurgence for Electric
North America has a long and complicated history with the electric car. In the early days of motoring, electric cars were actually more popular than their gasoline-powered counterparts. The North American electric car industry began in the 1890s, when a number of inventors and entrepreneurs began experimenting with using electricity to power vehicles. The first electric car was built in 1891 by William Morrison, and by the early 1900s, a number of companies were offering electric cars for sale. As oil became increasingly plentiful and affordable, gas-powered cars quickly came to dominate the market.
Electric cars all but disappeared from North America by the 1930s. In the past few years, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in electric cars. With concerns about climate change and air pollution, many consumers are looking for more environmentally friendly transportation options. As a result, a new generation of electric car is being developed and sold in North America. Only time will tell if this latest incarnation of the electric car will be able to take back the streets against its gas-powered rival.
